Abstract

In this body of abstract work, Nancy Emch steps away from the responsibility of likeness and into the freedom of sensation. These pieces are not constructed to depict, but to uncover—each one an exploration of movement, memory, and the quiet dialogue between control and surrender.

Working primarily in fluid, water-responsive media, Emch allows pigment to travel, settle, resist, and bloom. The resulting surfaces carry a record of their own making: washes layered over time, textures lifted and reworked, moments where intention meets accident. Rather than correcting these interactions, she follows them—treating the medium not as a tool, but as a collaborator.
